Get your car ready for winter: a practical checklist

Plan tyres, visibility, battery and maintenance, with enough margin for winter journeys.

Start with tyres and visibility

Check tyre condition and the vehicle's recommended pressures, and plan changes around your route. Check wipers, clean lights and screenwash suited to expected temperatures. Follow the handbook and current local rules.

Take small symptoms seriously

Record slow starting, recurring warnings or unusual electrical behaviour. Ask a workshop about the battery if unsure. An electric car's charge percentage does not describe its low-voltage battery or the rest of the vehicle.

Review maintenance

Check what falls due before longer winter journeys. Handle fluids as instructed and use the correct specification. Uncertain frost protection or repeated top-ups need investigation. Do not open a hot cooling system.

Pack for delays

Carry suitable warm clothing, an ice scraper, snow brush, charged phone and personal essentials. Keep warning equipment accessible. Adapt supplies to the journey; city trips and mountain passes need different margins.

Have an alternative plan

Check weather and official traffic information before departure. Plan breaks and alternatives for closures. MileHalo supplements this information; no reports does not guarantee a clear road. Adapt driving and postpone the trip when necessary.
