Tyres · Practical guide

When should you switch to winter tyres?

Plan your tyre change around road conditions, journeys and the rules where you drive.

Start with road conditions

Consider your actual route, the forecast and your vehicle's needs. A calendar date does not describe grip on a mountain road. Book early so you do not have to improvise when cold weather arrives.

Check each country's rules

Norwegian and Swedish requirements are not identical. This guide's Norwegian sources concern driving in Norway. Check current winter and studded-tyre rules with the relevant authority in every country you will visit.

Inspect before fitting

Check tread, damage and uneven wear before fitting. Ask a workshop about doubtful tyres. Confirm that the specification suits your vehicle and order replacements before a planned trip.

Follow the vehicle instructions

After fitting, inflation, wheel fastening and any tyre-pressure-system reset must follow the vehicle's instructions. Follow the specified follow-up checks too. Ask for qualified help if unsure.

Make a simple seasonal plan

Keep measurements, schedule the next check and plan for winter conditions on long journeys. Adjust speed and following distance to actual grip. Winter tyres do not make every condition safe.
