Find the vehicle's value
Use the handbook or pressure label, often by the door or fuel flap. Follow the car manufacturer rather than a general number on a tyre sidewall. Check differences between axles, wheel sizes and normal or full loads.
Measure cold tyres
Follow the manufacturer's procedure. Pressure rises as tyres warm during driving. Do not release air from a warm tyre just to match a cold value. Recheck cold if unsure and use the correct units.
Check systematically
Park safely and check one wheel at a time. Record recommended and measured pressures. Check the spare if fitted and covered by the handbook. Replace valve caps. Use the load table before a fully loaded trip.
Investigate warnings
Stop safely and follow the vehicle's instructions after a pressure warning. Damage or a substantial pressure loss may make continued driving unsafe. Do not merely reset the warning. A specific reset procedure may be needed after adjustment.
Track recurring changes
A wheel repeatedly needing air should be examined. Record the date, wheel and pressure change for the workshop. Make pressure checks a routine and check before long journeys, not only when a warning appears.
