Fuel · Practical guide

Is a detour for cheaper fuel worth it?

Extra distance, tolls and time can cancel out a lower pump price. Compare the full cost of the stop.

Start with the price saving

Multiply the litres you actually plan to buy by the price difference. Buying 45 litres at 1 kr less per litre saves 45 kr before other costs. Do not use the full tank capacity if you only need a small top-up.

Include the entire detour

Count extra distance compared with your original journey. A station six kilometres off the route and back adds twelve kilometres. At 6.5 L/100 km and 22 kr/l, that costs 17.16 kr in fuel, leaving 27.84 kr of a 45 kr saving.

Add other costs

Tolls, parking, wear and time can remove the remaining saving. A 15-minute detour to save 10 kr may be less useful than a station on your route. Your time and need for a break also matter.

Find the break-even point

If you plan to buy 40 litres and the extra journey costs 24 kr, the price must be at least 0.60 kr/l lower to cover that cost. Allow for possible price changes. These figures are worked examples.

Combine stops

Refuelling may fit a shopping trip or a rest stop you were already planning. Compare against the journey you would actually make, check current prices and choose a convenient stop without unnecessary driving.
