How to compare workshop quotes for car servicing

Request the same work, an itemised total and clear terms for additional jobs.

Describe the same job

Give workshops the necessary vehicle details, mileage, service date and history. Separate scheduled servicing from fault diagnosis or a specific repair. A routine-service quote does not imply that every unknown problem is included.

Request an itemised price

Ask for the total including tax, labour, parts, fluids and fees. Check whether diagnostics, a courtesy car or collection are included. If prices differ greatly, compare the actual tasks covered.

Check competence and approval

For Norwegian workshops, Statens vegvesen provides an approved-workshop directory. Check approval for the relevant work. Other countries use local requirements. Ask about model-specific knowledge and equipment for specialist systems.

Agree on extra work

Require a price and explanation before additional work begins. Ask how findings are documented and what further diagnosis costs. Identify who can approve additions and the number the workshop should call.

Use the same checklist

Compare scope, parts, total, timing, transport, documentation and extra-work terms. A slightly higher quote may be more convenient if complete. Afterwards, compare the invoice with the agreement and retain updated service records.
